Sheridan High School Theater Department will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s THE KING & I May 2-4 at McKenzie Auditorium at 7:00 pm, with a 2:00 matinee on Saturday.
The musical chronicles the journey of Anna Leonowens, come to teach the King of Siam’s children “Western ways.” In an attempt to keep his country balanced between the traditions of what have been and ever changing world views, he finds himself defending his honor when he is accused of being a barbarian. Anna, played by Olivia Hicks, finds herself placed in the position of teacher, party planner, diplomat, and confidant of the King, played by Austin Cox.
SHS’s production of this work is an academic exploration of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s brilliant work, written during Broadway’s “Golden Era.” While the production is directed and overseen by Brent Miller, the program’s head, and assisted by Summer Scott, with musical direction by Gregg Scott, the show is also led by student stage managers Anna Holiman, Erin Rowell, Brandon Hargis, and Austin Dunn, with choreography by Laura Parker.
The King & I is a show that has a wonderful moral, sweeping dance numbers, beautiful costumes, and songs that will leave you humming! Come see the magic May 2nd through 4th.
